How to Keep Your New Year’s Fitness Resolution

02heafea4

All of us have made some type of resolution for the New Year. I know I have made many and not followed through or been consistent. Have you? Don’t fib because I know you have broken many like I and others did. If you resolved to take better care of your physical health, then you are not alone. We all want the same thing. What will you do to stick with it? Here are some tips to get started.

Be Practical

The ball is going to drop on New Year’s Eve and many people will be excited and inspired about the year 2015. That’s all good, but don’t allow the enthusiasm to trick you into making unrealistic goals that you cannot keep. Many people fall into that trap. Make goals that are attainable. For example, if your resolution is never to eat from a fast food restaurant again, you are only kidding yourself. If you are planning on losing 30 pounds, but hate to workout, how are you going to handle that? Give yourself time to achieve your goals. Use the resources available to you and pace yourself. Nothing happens overnight and you are going to have to work hard at this.

Make Advance Plans

Some people make New Year’s resolution the day before January rolls around. Wrong thing! Don’t wait until the last minute because then this will only be based on your emotions for that day. You should make advanced plans before the arrival of December 31st.

Draft Your Plan

It is best to think about how you are going to handle temptations such as skipping the exercise routine to watch TV or lay longer in bed. You could call a friend to attend the exercise class with you. Give yourself a good self-talk. Think about the good your exercise will do, even if it means just burning 300 calories.

Get Fit

If you are serious about getting fit, the pounds will fall off. Don’t let the weight be your only reason for exercising. If this is your only motivation, you will give up when the results are not fast enough for you. To motivate yourself further, invest in a comfortable pair of walking shoes, set of dumbbells and some workout clothes. To stick to your fitness plan, you also need the right equipment.

Make a List

It is ideal to make a list of things that will motivate you. Over time, you can add to the list and ask loved ones and close friends to contribute to the list. Keep the list with you so that you can refer to it when necessary.

Be Accountable

Tell others what you are doing. This way, you will become accountable and likely receive the support and help you need from family and friends.

Give Yourself Rewards

When you reward yourself from time to time, it helps you to maintain your focus. I am not saying you should pig out on a large box of chocolates, but new fitness attire or a trip to the movie is ideal. Don’t be hard on yourself, if you mess up. Just take it one day at a time and keep track of your progress. Soon, it will become a habit and lifestyle that you can be proud of.
